Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day is observed every year and is an opportunity for us to come together to learn, share and remember.  This event commemorates the historical atrocities of genocides worldwide including the holocaust and places such as Rwanda, Bosnia, Darfur, Iraq and Cambodia.

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2024 is Fragility of Freedom.

Freedom means different things to different people. In every genocide that has taken place, those who are targeted for persecution have had their freedom restricted and removed before many of them are murdered.

This event will include a presentation from a daughter sharing her mother’s story of escaping arrest for being Jewish. As next year’s Holocaust Memorial Day 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, the event will acknowledge how the genocide shattered freedom in Rwanda. We will also have a Kurdish speaker share their account of the Halabja massacre.

There will be music from the World Harmony Orchestra, whose musicians include refugees from around the world.

Please click here to read about this year’s theme. Reflecting on this theme we can look at how we play a role in creating a fairer and more equal society.

The event will be open to the public, schools, community and faith groups, as well as Members of the council and council employees.

Please register to attend the event by clicking the Eventbrite link below to confirm your attendance and share with others.
