Space4 are really excited to share with you their next event where they’ve teamed up with fellow Finsbury Park organisations and businesses to talk about the Afro-Caribbean experience of being business owners in London.
The George Padmore Institute (GPI) will join to introduce and screen their 40 min documentary film ‘Mangrove Nine’ about the conflict between the police and the black community in Notting Hill at the start of 1970s. It was directed by Franco Rosso and written by Finsbury Park political and cultural activist John La Rose who was the founder of both New Beacon Books and the George Padmore Institute.
The film will be followed by a discussion with members of the Parry family who opened one of the first black hairdressers in the country just round the corner from SPACE4. The Parry family continue to run businesses in Finsbury Park (Mento Flowers and Coffee, Kenya Josiah) and will join us to talk about their experiences.
We’ll be asking, how much have things really changed between then and now?
